I spied a woman just east of the C&O towpath's mile 14 marker heading back towards the DC area on Friday morning around 11:30am or so. When and where have you unexpectedly spied a Capital Bikeshare bike being ridden outside of the local confines of DC/Crystal City?

That has to be an expensive ride. I find it hard to sustain more than 9-10 mph on the Bikeshare bikes. The towpath could be even slower. If she did a 28-mile round trip, that could be 3 hrs. total. That adds up to a $22.50 charge for the extra time above 30 minutes.

I haven't seen any Bikeshare bikes that far away from stations.

She could be a visitor in town for the Cherry Blossom Festival. The daily bike rentals would be a better option for those looking for longer rides.

She was wearing a helmet, which leads me to believe she's more likely a local (due to the non-rentals of helmets). I assume she decided she wanted to go up to see Great Falls, so perhaps 4 or 5 hours including visit time. I hope she understood the pricing structure...

Anyway, aside from the cost, that does sort of kick ass. :)

Today I saw two people on CaBis heading south on the MVT near Collingwood Road. It's not as far as mile 14 on the W&OD; about 6 miles from the nearest station in Alexandria, but if they thought they were gonna make it all the way to Mount Vernon then that would be an expensive trip.

I see CABI's on the Custis all the time.... which is interesting cause there arent any stations on the Custis... where yes down near Rosslyn... But it kinda makes you wonder.... if there are all these CABI's on the Custis, maybe it would be a good idea to but a station along there: say at W&L High School / APS Admin Building / W&L Community Pool / W&L Parking Lot - Outdoor Courts - Monthly Flee Market ---- Or near Glebe as that is a big walking community ---- or near Westover as that is a big destination....

(BTW CABI station placement is the subject of Monday's ARLBAC)

Some people mentioned seeing CaBi bikes at Mt. Vernon before, maybe as early as last year. This was before there were even bike stations in Old Town, so those people were riding from Crystal City or D.C.

The Custis is a great way to get from Rosslyn or Courthouse to Ballston, and there are plenty of stations in both. You can easily get from a Ballston station to a Rosslyn station or vice versa in the 30 free minutes. (Ok Rosslyn - Ballston isn't "easy"). There is a planned station at 20th and Quincy -- about 5 blocks up from W&L -- and there are stations along Glebe south of the trail about the same distance.

I'm all for more stations, just giving you the background.

I saw one at George Mason out in Fairfax, but then again it was on display during the Fairfax Bike summit. I couldn't help from thinking, "Wow, I wonder how much the usage fees are up to by now!"

I saw one on Thursday heading down 395 the wrong way on to the 14th St Bridge. Yes, on the interstate - southbound in the northbound lanes. Godspeed, little CaBi...

This summer I saw a pair crossing Chain Bridge into VA...would've loved to see them attempt 41st St or even Glebe. It's too bad Strava doesn't have a CaBi plugin with CaBi specific KOM/QOMs. I think that could really drive up CaBi usage, just like the winter warrior contest they did that first year.

This was not a CaBi bike and I could have taken a picture because I was stuck in traffic going west-bound but I recently saw some dude on a mountain bike heading east on the SE/SW freeway east of the South Capitol Street on-ramp during the afternoon rush.

Given that the highway is elevated wouldn't it have been easier (and safer!) for this person to ride the ground level streets to get where he was going, as opposed to climbing 3 stories up an on-ramp??

That section used to be part of my car commute...90% of the time a bike would be faster than traffic, but still illegal and ill-advised, to say the least!

Don't know if it was my report you're thinking of, but I did see that on a really hot day in July 2011. He was actually making pretty good time - we passed him at Belle Harbor, he got to Mt. Vernon as we were leaving, and he caught up with us again at Belle Harbor on the way back!
