Would anyone be interested in a get-together early tomorrow morning (Mon., Oct. 7) at the Java Shack? Maybe starting around 7:30 or 8-ish?

In (and this counts for Coffeeneuring)

That was my thought as well. I think I'm in for that this year. :-) Plus, it's about time for me to find my way to Java Shack! (which I think is part of what coffeeneuring is about).

GirlonaBike says she might come about 8.30 ish. And the wife (bikeless) might make an appearance a little after 8.

Sounds good. I might be a little closer to 8 a.m too.

Rode by about 7:55 and didn't see anyone there. It's okay because I didn't have time to stop. Just wanted to say hi.

Arlingtonrider, were you waiting at the bus shelter on Arlington Mill near Walter Reed just after 7:30 am? If so, how were you getting to the Java Shack?

Yep, that was me. ;) I was running late and thought this might be a good day to learn how to load my bike onto a bus.

So I had a multi-modal trip to Clarendon and a very pleasant ride home from Java Shack and the Non-essential Coffee Club get-together on my bike, using a nice direct route that Dismal Scientist showed me.

Eminva, I got there just after 8 a.m. and Dismal Scientist and RCannon100 and Eliz. showed up shortly thereafter. Sorry we missed you! We non-essentials were running a little late.

Ugh. Arlnow.com reports that a cyclist was struck this morning near the intersection of Rt. 50 and Filmore, an intersection that Dismal and I rode through earlier this morning. Possible broken leg. I hope he/she will be ok.

Sorry to hear that and hope the cyclist recovers quickly. I prefer crossing Rte 50 in that area at the traffic light on Highland.

I prefer not crossing it - its why I prefer the WOD route or the MVT route. There is also Wash Blvd where the sidewalk (or something that resembles a sidewalk) goes under it. There is also a pedestrian bridge over it at TJ (which also has the Glebe Road bridge with a very broad side walk.

Thanks. Will keep that in mind, although the Filmore intersection has a light and didn't seem too bad when we went through it. From the photo in arlnow, it looks like the cyclist might have been riding on Rt. 50 itself.

The traffic light is on Irving, which is a signed bike route north and south of Arlington Blvd. Fillmore is a signed bike route north of 50, but not south. There is no light at Highland.

It looks like the cyclist that got hit was actually riding on Arlington Blvd, not crossing it.

That sidewalk crosses the ramps between Wash. Blvd and Arl. Blvd. I'd rather use a traffic light.

That's right, I forgot that I move over to Highland just south of 10th St, good catch. :D

I hate the riding surface on that pedestrian bridge by TJ and the sharp turning angle on the north side.

I don't mind this route, since the sightlines for the ramp crossings are pretty good. The sidewalk underneath 50 is not good, but it's fine if you slow down. I find the time lost to stopping for cars on the ramps and slowly going under 50 is still less than going all the way over to Fillmore or Irving. Given the alternatives, I'd be pretty surprised if the cyclist was on 50 there...
