View Full Version : Bike Arlington Presents: BikeSwell The Movie - Oct. 10th - Cinema & Drafthouse

09-24-2013, 04:57 PM
Ok, folks, you are hearing it here first! It's the fall cycling event you've been waiting for. (After the Arlington Fun Ride (http://www.arlingtonfunride.org/), of course!)

BikeArlington, in partnership with the Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee, presents the "bike-umentary" of the year: BikeSwell - Smart Movement in Arlington, Virginia.

This film features local bike advocacy rock stars and highlights the triumphs and tribulations of making Arlington a premiere bicycle friendly community. The feature presentation will be followed by a panel discussion so you can learn more from some of the people involved in Arlington's "Smart Movement":

•Chris Eatough (Panel Moderator) - BikeArlington Program Manager
•Jason Berry - Director, Gripped Films
•Mark Blacknell - President of the Board, Washington Area Bicyclist Association
•Gillian Burgess - Founder, KidicalMass Arlington
•Edgar Gil Rico - League Certified Instructor, Hispanic Marketing Specialist
•Jakob Wolf-Barnett - Chair, Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee

Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Arlington Cinema 'N' Drafthouse
2903 Columbia Pike
Arlington, VA 22204

Tickets are free but we strongly suggest donating at least $5 to the non-profit organization, Phoenix Bikes. Phoenix Bikes rebuilds and refurbishes old bikes, and supports youth by providing a safe and educational environment for them to volunteer and learn.

Doors open 7:00pm.
Movie starts 7:30pm.
Panel discussion/Q&As begins at 8pm.
Doors close 9pm.

There will be prizes raffled off after the film, donated by BikeArlington, the League of American Bicyclists, WABA and New Belgium Brewery.

But wait, there's more!

Phoenix Bikes has generously donated a bike that will be raffled off as the Grand Prize. Every attendee will receive one raffle ticket. Additional tickets are available for purchase ($2) with all proceeds going to Phoenix Bikes.

What are you waiting for? Get your tickets here! (http://bikeswellmovie.eventbrite.com/)

FYI--More than 100 free tickets have been "sold" in the past 24 hours. Get your tickets ASAP if you are planning on going!!

And, I hope when folks are getting their tickets they are either donating to Phoenix Bikes or saving up so you can give at the door (and buy a bunch of raffle tix at the event!)

Ticket purchased, cash will be donated at the door... I really thought this was a movie about me.... BikeSewell, but obviously I read that wrong! Regardless, can't wait to see the movie and all your smiling faces!

Only about 50 tickets left for this, with more than a week to go. It'll probably sell out, so if you are interested in going you should snag your ticket ASAP.

I'll be there. I just posted the info to my workplace's bike listserv.

10-08-2013, 10:21 AM
Is there a way for people, who no longer can make it the screening, to post here to give away their tickets?

It occurred to me that this would be a great even to bring my nieces to, ya know now that it's sold out and all...

Either way, I will be there with or without my nieces but I wouldn't want those precious seats go to waste.

10-08-2013, 01:06 PM
Wanted to let everyone know that there WILL be extra bike parking the night of the event thanks to Phoenix Bikes! There will be volunteers at the front door to direct you where the extra racks are located...

10-08-2013, 01:57 PM
For those of you without tickets, show up and we might be able to let you in about 10 minutes before the start of the movie. While there is a possibility of no-shows, we can't guarantee you'll be let in.

If you have reserved tickets and you now know that you aren't coming, feel free to broker with your ticketless friends to swap ahead of time so they can take your place...

Am I the only person who biked to the Drafthouse tonight? Felt pretty bad *** riding CaBi in the cool rain on the way to the theater. Until I nearly took a spill over a one-foot drop in the temporary sidewalk along Columbia Pike! The asphalt path actually drops down about a foot near the Washington Blvd. bridge.

Anyway, great movie and discussion! Looking forward to the sequel too.

Great movie, fun night. Great seeing all of you. I hope the movie gets a wider viewing audience to not only promote Arlington but also spark interest in bike infrastructure elsewhere.

Did someone mention how others might get to watch the movie? Will it be online? Pay-per-view?

I thought I had hears somewhere that it was supposed to be available on the Bike Arlington website, but I could have been misinformed. It's not there yet, if it is being posted there.

I believe they are posting it on YouTube by the end of the weekend. I can't remember where I saw that, but fairly sure I read it.

Awesome job! Keep up the hard work.
After watching that, I have no other choice than to go for a ride in Arlington!

Yeah, that was a great documentary. Thanks for making it available online!

Very nice! Could have gone a little easier on the background music though :)

Great film. And appreciate the message that we need to actively support proposed connection initiatives to add balance to the input from organized neighborhood groups.

Loved this film. I shared it on FB with a High School friend who now lives in the Netherlands, and is always going on about America's weak cycling infra and culture.
