Someone posted this photo on the Capital Bikeshare Facebook page:

While it wouldn't be ideal as the primary means of rebalancing bikes, it could be useful as a supplement. Rebalancing vans have difficulty reaching downtown D.C. stations during rush hour. Smaller bike trailers might have a better chance at reaching the stations in time to have a practical effect.

The bikes wouldn't have to be moved very far. Just far enough out of the core downtown area where other stations usually aren't as full in rush hour. Or the bike trailers could be operated in coordination with the rebalancing vans. The vans could be parked outside of the core downtown area and the bike trailers could be used to shuttle bikes to the vans.

The trailers would be less expensive than additional vans. The labor cost should be the same. Someone has to drive a van and someone would have to ride the bike trailer.

CaBi employees seem to monitor the Facebook page closely, so hopefully the photo will inspire them to try out a few bike trailers in the near future, to supplement the existing rebalancing vans.
