We went for a little bike ride last week. 394 miles along the Erie Canal. We are still sorting through the pictures but here is a sampling:

We started in Buffalo with friends Vic and Tracy:

3560

The canal was a mix of paved path and stone dust. We preferred the stone dust:

3565

We also had some road riding. The farm roads were great:

Especially when they turned into "seasonally maintained" roads:

Erie Canal continued:

All that riding made us hungry so we turned the trip into a tour of small town diners:

3566

Where we found second breakfast:

3567

6 of the 7 nights we camped along the canal:

3568

And on the next to last day got to put the first tire tracks on brand new trail:

3569

All to soon we reached the end:

3570

I'm hoping to do some of this ride this coming weekend, although along NYS Bicycle Route 5 (https://www.dot.ny.gov/bicycle/maps). I'll post up pics when I get back!

I did Niagara Falls to Albany on the canal and Bike Route 5. It's incredibly flat but for a couple of hills in the Little Falls area. The canal is lots of fun with free camping and nearby services. Highly recommended.

Yep, the amount of camping was amazing and a huge change from DC. We stayed in two paid campground (one private and one a state park), at two locks, behind a fire station and at a small town visitor center. On our last evening we ran into a canal system exec who basically said you could camp anywhere you like along canal property. He recommended staying at the locks though as most of the lockmasters will give you access to their showers, bathrooms and power outlets.

Excellent trip made even better by unbelievably beautiful weather. We had two hours of rain in 8 days and those two hours happened to come on the one and only day we opted for a B&B. It doesn't get better than that.
