View Full Version : Grinding Gravel on Sunday.

I'm planning a short-ish gravel grinder ride for early Sunday morning. I haven't finalized a route yet, but I'd like to do a 30-40 mile route... between 3 and 3.5 hours of riding starting at 7:30am in Leesburg. Riding gravel takes quite a bit more effort than riding pavement. Generally a 30 mile gravel ride feels like a 40-45 mile road ride when it comes to effort. There will be hills. :D

I tend to organize rides through Facebook. If you're friends with me there, please send me a message and I'll make sure you get added to the list. If you're not on Facebook or not a friend there, send me an IM and I'll make sure you get the ride information.

Cross or mountain bike is pretty much required for these rides. 33mm tires are about the most narrow that I'd suggest running. Please let me know if you have questions! Thanks!

As long as I get a green light tonight, I'll be in and can drive. Happy to give rides from Falls Church (or NoVa in general) if its helpful.

That was a blast. We'll do another "Party Paced" ride in a month or so. Maybe 3 weeks if I can swing it. Next week is going to be longer, more spirited pace and with few/no stops. IM me if you're interested.

I'd like to formally apologize for my washboard opera singing.

Way too much fun than people should have on two wheels.

We are grinding gravel in LouCou again this weekend.

Pace will be a little faster and steady... We'll slow to regroup, but I'd like to roll with only one major stop for water at the half-way mark.

40 mile loop this time. More climbing.... think the Old Waterford Road climbs repeated three times. There are few flat sections on the loop. You're usually climbing or descending.

If you're interested, send me an IM or hit me on Facebook. I'll make sure you get the invite!

Love,

Dirt.

Still riding this Sunday? 'Cross season is just around the corner, it's time to put the knobbies back on and get dirty.

Looking ahead: Perhaps a party-paced Gravel Ride on 8/25? This will be my last gravel ride before going to Idaho the next weekend. I'm thinking of riding the tandem.

What's the scoop on your Idaho ride? I just did the Ride Idaho ride last week in the panhandle (Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Thompson Falls, Wallace et environs.) Two years ago the ride was in the Sawtooths which was just gorgeous.

My family is from SW Idaho, where, except for some areas around the Snake River, the riding is not... great, unless you like lots of flat corn and sugar beet fields with all the roads laid out in a mile-square grid pattern... and chip-sealed within an inch of their lives...

You might need to bring a respirator. The whole state is one smoky mess from fires in central Idaho. There was smoke in Boise over 50 miles away.

It's on fire at the moment. My thoughts go out to everyone evacuating and fighting the fire. I know people doing both.

I'm going to volunteer and then ride and then volunteer again. It is going to be a weird but fun weekend. My trip will be a whirlwind.

Did you say party? Can I wear my cowgirl costume?

Okay. I have to change plans... Sorry. I just don't have time to set up and lead a good ride on Sunday... at least not for a big group. This week has been crazy. We're going to postpone a few weeks and pick it up after I get back from Idaho.

Thanks for your patience.
