I got the following email from WABA today:

"Tour de Lions
Sat., Aug. 24
Ashland, Va.
A WABA Event Partnership

Come join us as we return to Ashland, Va. to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals of Richmond. This year our rides will include 10-, 30-, and 50-mile routes and, for the first time, an over-the-top 100-plus-mile Ashland to Tappahannock ride.

As in the past, the routes are supported with signs, cue sheets, rest stops, a quick lunch at Tappahannock (ride to find out if it's crabs or oysters this year) and an all-you-can-eat meal at the finish line. Food Lion is once again our main sponsor, and its associates will go all-out at rest stops.

Children's Hospital is a worthy beneficiary of the funds we raise, and the ride from Ashland to Tappahannock boasts some of the most gorgeous scenery in Virginia. Register here (http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=1497) or email wlowry7@yahoo.com.

Update: Food Lion has agreed to sponsor the first 150 WABA-affiliated riders that register by Aug. 15. This means WABA-affiliated riders will only need to pay the $35 registration fee. Register for Tour de Lions here (http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=1497)."

I contacted Wayne Lowry about the Food Lion offer to sponsor and he requested that I create a WABA team when I registered. I have done so.

Sure. I'm in.

So far there are four riders registered with the WABA team for this ride. Anyone interested at the last minute?

which ride is the team doing? 100, 50 or 33 miles?

08-20-2013, 05:16 AM
I am doing the 50, if Consularrider is true to form he will do the 100

I'll probably do the 50 miler. The 100 is an out and back plus I may end up also riding the Reston Century on Sunday so I'll need to keep some energy in reserve.

Don't know if I could swing 50 miles, since I haven't done one of these before. Is it a real serious race, or can old bike chicks show up on their commuter hybrid just for fun?

This is a ride, not a race. You will likely see all kinds of folks riding all kinds of bikes at all kinds of speeds. The 33 and 50 mile routes have a fair amount of overlap so it looks like you could start the 50 miler and then cut it down on the fly.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still thinking about it. Looks like it will be a beautiful day.

Ride report. A superb day for a ride. BBQ at the end was a treat.

Open roads, polite traffic and did I mention the BBQ.

Roads offered great views of corn, soybeans and forests.

Many rest stops, this was my first that was run by citizens dedicated to protecting us from zombies. They seem to have been effective as no zombies were seen on the route.

Thanks to Consularrider for his able service as the WABA team captain.
