View Full Version : Wednesday Night Ride Fresh Bikes in Mosaic, Merrifield VA

acc
06-12-2013, 08:53 AM
Dirt has created an interesting course that originates at the FreshBikes' Shop in the Mosaic District on Wednesday nights, rolling at 6:30.

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2669619

This is a no-drop group ride with something for everyone. The course is designed to allow for multiple laps.

If you are new to riding this is the place to start. Dirt is one of the best ride leaders in the area. The course is mostly on quiet residential streets.

Tonight Dirt is giving a quick tutorial on how to navigate with your Garmin at 6:00 pm.

Come out to this ride now before it gets big. That's one additional advantage to this ride. Unlike Wakefield or FreshBikes @ Arlington this is a small-ish, intimate ride. You will not be one of the salmon fighting through 100s of other riders.

Will Freshbikes be adding this to their website? I looked last night, but they just had info for the Ballston and Bethesda rides.

My company's workshop is right behind the Mosaic district so I will certainly join in for one of the rides, unfortunately I am bailing early today to try and beat the rain. Have fun tonight and I'll see you all at the next one!

Hmmm ... Any chance you are going and are going to ride there from DC? If you are, and IF (big IF) I can sneak out of work, I'd meet you at Key Bridge.

Going to miss it this week. Had a spill on the way home that involved me, a manhole cover and a curb (half a mile from home, that'll teach me to stray from my normal route thru the neighborhood) on my morning ride and need to stay home and lick my wounds.

Thanks Ann, dcv, Kel, PeteD, culimerc, oneeighth and others for showing up this week and in past weeks. This has become a fun ride. Sorry that I haven't been around this thread. ACC and dcv not only rhyme, but also were a big help with the group last night. Don't worry about the wrong turn, dcv, it happens to all of us. I took a detour last night too, though mine was trying to figure out how to get around the tree crew. It helped having familiar people manage the group. It is hard to single-handedly keep the group going the right way when there are faster and slower folks. You both made it much easier to lead the ride. it is much appreciated. In the future, we'll get a plan set up ahead.

Now to answer questions....

Yes the ride is on the web site. It has been since the first week we lead it. You just kinda have to look for it. http://freshbikescycling.com/ --> click on "Rides and Events" ---> then click on "Mosaic Fairfax Events" You'll see the listing that gives a little detail as well as the calendar listing of when things are happening. Here is the direct link: http://freshbikescycling.com/index.php/content/events#Mosaic

Cue Sheets are provided at the beginning of the ride. Most people just go with the flow even though the cue sheets are provided.

The route: So far I've been the one who has picked and scouted all the routes. My buddy Dane came up with an AWESOME loop that we will add into the mix later this summer. He's also been a huge help with fine tuning the rides. The loop that is listed on the web site is our original loop. That one is a little bit complex and hard for one person to lead. Like dcv said, we've switched over to a new loop last week and it worked out quite well. I think that loop is going to be the mainstay for a while. It isn't quite as quiet and twisty as the original loop, but it is fun and it gives the option for people to cut the ride short or do extra laps if they so desire.

Latest incarnation of the Original Loop: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2634864
Current Loop: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2669619
Possible Future Loop (for an advanced group): http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2694726

Pacing: This is intended as a training ride, but that said, it is a no-drop ride and I work quite hard to make sure that people do not feel left behind. There's always going to be a group that goes off the front. Last night worked out well. Part of the time I got to ride at the front while dcv, ACC and Brian made sure that the group stayed on course. Part of the time they got to ride at the front and I got to hang further back. It was perfect. Average speeds varied from 14-17mph for the group.

As the ride evolves (it is only the second week on this route) there will be more people riding a variety of paces. There will always be someone making sure that the two main groups are well guided.

It looks like I will miss this next week's ride. I wasn't supposed to be there last night, but my trip got canceled. It appears that my trip will be rescheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. I may be gone for a few weeks actually, because I have a trip planned after that. Don't let that dissuade you from showing up. Actually I need you to do exactly the opposite. Show up for this ride! Make it what YOU want it to be. Make sure that you are there to speak up for the kind of pacing and level of social interaction is represented.

Thanks for your support!

Pete

That was so much fun!

I really enjoyed the chance to ride with a group - it's super helpful to see how other people ride as a way of improving my own riding.

I should have hydrated better yesterday but I still had a great ride and I got to go REALLY FAST down a hill so that was cool :D

Probably won't be able to make the ride very often because of my work schedule but I will definitely try!

Thanks for making it happen!

One more thing: There's a skills clinic on "intro to pack riding" on the second Monday of every month done by my friend Joe and his team. These are pretty good sessions. If you're interested in the skills that it takes to ride in a pack, this is a good place to learn them. It is also listed on the Freshbikes web site under Mosaic Events: http://freshbikescycling.com/index.php/content/events#Mosaic

I don't care if we get lost every week! It's wonderful to have an opportunity so close I can ride to it. I'm excited the course goes past my house.

I'm also elated that my neighbors can see other people on bikes. I don't feel quite as freakish. *emphasis on the word quite*

Three years ago when I bought my bike I had to go out to Wakefield Park to find a big group ride. Two years ago I went as far as FreshBikes in Arlington but that was a whole night's commitment.

This ride is fantastic! I can leave the house and be there in 15 minutes.

I get to see Pete and Vince and James and Liz and Dane!

And I get to have a Ruination IPA afterwards.

It beats the hell out of a Book Club.

The FreshBikes Arlington goes a block away from our house. My husband just waits for the ride to get to us, then jumps on. I miss the days when we could go out to cheer the bikes coming back (the little one goes to sleep too early).

Yes, it is very flat. There is one gradual hill that runs past OLGC. It's challenging but not insurmountable. I judge hills on the amount of cursing I use to get up one. This rates one damn with no aspersions towards anyone's mother.

How's the fit? It says "race cut" but is that US race cut, or Euro race cut? I find that, even if it's all billed as race cut, I fit an XL in the US brands but need an XXL for the Euro stuff (the Italian brands, in particular). I've never tried on any of Primal's stuff, so I don't have a good idea of where their sizing is at.

Our team kit is also Primal custom; they make good stuff (and pricing is great). Primal race cut is US fit, not Euro. http://www.primalcustom.com/fitguide.html

I have XL jerseys, but should have gotten Large (was worried they wouldn't be long enough, but XL is a little looser than it needs to be). The primal shorts/bibs are also pretty nice. The stitching does not appear to be holding up as well as PI, but they're comfortable.

Don't forget the Freshbikes Mosaic ride tonight. I'm doing a pre-ride tonight too if you're off work early. It is a lovely loop to the south of the shop thanks to Fairfax County completing a few roads behind Fairfax Innova hospital.

Pre-ride meets between 4 and 4:15pm at the Freshbikes Mosaic shop. Wheels rolling at 4:30 for a 16-mile loop of rolling hills.
Main ride meets between 6 and 6:15pm at the Freshbikes Mosaic shop. Wheels rolling at 6:30 for a 14.5 mile loop with an option to make it 19 miles.

We usually get a beer at Lost Dog Cafe around the corner after the ride.

Hope you can make it to the ride tonight!

One of these days I am actually going to make it to this ride. I have heard good things about the group and would like to check it out sometime. Ok actually I want an excuse to go have a good beer at Lost Dog and riding is a good way to prep for beer consumption :)

Pete

I'm not able to do the ride tonight, but do you have a GPS map of some sort for the pre-ride loop? Would love to have it for some other time.

I'm hoping to be able to stick around tonight. I'll probably be tail-gunning, the commuter is *not* a fast bike.

I'll be coming tonight, but first I need to change a flat on my road bike. I tried to do it this morning (woke up early), but sadly when I started to pump air into the tire I heard a HISSSSSSSS. I then groaned and decided in my still-sleepy state to replace the tire this afternoon. Note: I am NOT a morning person in the least bit, and early-morning bike work (even a simple flat tire change) is a no-go for me. At least I can buy some spare tubes at Freshbikes while I'm there!

Gotta get home by 7:00 tonight so I am going to try my best to jet out of the shop for the pre-ride.

Probably the WOD to Gallows and south on Gallows to just past Lee Hwy.

Yeah, taking Shreve to Lee Highway and then riding on Lee Highway does not seem to be much fun.

Shreve is ok if you can maintain a high top speed. It's downhill to flat from the W&OD to lee highway, and there are new wide sidewalks, bit I agree gallows is more comfortable.

To Dickie:

Just a short, heartfelt thank you for your many kindnesses to me this afternoon. Thank you for calling out the cars I did not hear, thank you for looking over your shoulder to see if I was in danger of being dropped, thank you for pacing me back up. You were truly kind and I appreciate it.

On Gallows, turn right at Prosperity and go 2 blocks to Merilee and resume going south across Lee Hwy. Turn left on Strawberry to get to Freshbikes. Merilee is much nicer that Gallows for those final blocks.

There are a few ways to go. I'll post them up in the morning. I'm pretty much toast right now and couldn't create a sensible route if my life depended on it. There are a few ways to get there that are not bad. It'll get a lot better when Fairfax extends the Gallows bike lane further south.

Tons of thanks to Ann, Liz, DCV, Dismal, James, PeterD and so many others who came out to ride tonight. I couldn't have done it without you!!! I was leading a group of 41 people solo... with no-one to lead the fast group but me. I owe y'all a beer for sure!

Thank you very much.

My profuse apologies to those I led astray and to Dirt for betraying the confidence you placed in me. On the upside, I'm sure the adrenaline rush of riding on 123 helped everyone get a new PR on Col de Wolftrap!

You are more than welcome, but I was simply taking the opportunity to spend some time talking and riding with you, the pleasure was all mine... in fact that 40mph bomb down Picket was all you, I just followed your line!

Did the ride for the first time yesterday (only a week later than I had planned). It was fun, even though I was in the group that got left behind due to a red light. The sprinkling felt really good when finishing the ride, although it did get even better on my way home :)

I haven't done a group ride in a while, but I must say I did like the pace. I imagine I will try out the Ballston Freshbikes ride in the future.

To be honest, I didn't know ANYONE there! I'm terrible with names.

I was riding my red 2011 Fuji Newest 3.0 road bike. I was wearing a blue "Reuse, Redesign, Cycle" shirt, black cycling cargo shorts, and had my silver helmet with camera and lights on top.

We talked before going out and after coming back. Glad you enjoyed the ride! Join us again next week.

I was riding for the glory of Freshbikes last night. For once, I didn't snap any photos of the new FB Kit. Here's what the jersey looked like:

Any idea on the pricing? I wasn't super impressed by the FB Sugoi kit, but I would seriously consider the Assos stuff, especially if it's a little cheaper than the regular Assos jerseys.

Please show up and help him guide if your schedule allows!

Today is arguably the best day of the year to ride a bicycle. Temps in the upper 60s, lower 70s. Trust me... you don't want to miss this one.

The Freshbikes Mosaic ride will have some guests from Boston tonight... some folks from the Best Buddies Foundation will be here doing some work for the ride in October and need a bike ride for the evening. They'll be joining in.

Please come out and join us! I think this is going to be a lot of fun. I'd love to have a huge group out tonight.

If you have the day off or feel like you're "coming down with something" I'll be doing a pre-pre ride at 3pm. Pre-ride is wheels rolling at 4:30. Main event is wheels rolling at 6:30.

Let me know if you have questions.

WE SHOULD GO FOR A BIKE RIDE!

You can stash your bags behind the counter during the ride if you like. Lots of people do that.

Several of us have done that; doesn't look weird at all. At least not on this ride.

My road bike is in Pete's box on a truck heading east at the moment, so I won't be able to make it. Fully loaded commuter is one thing, mountain bike is another. (As dcv observed when he caught me on the commute this morning, I have s-1 problems.)

Have fun!

Okay, let me clarify:

Pete kindly loaned me his bike shipping crate to get my bike out to Oregon and back. I was there last week on vacation.

I sent it home via FedEx and according to their efficient systems, it is now somewhere between Oregon and here.
