View Full Version : Should one clear downed trees/sticks from the trail?

Hello all...a general logistics question:

As I was walking along the CCT with my son the other day, I noticed a tree across the trail...This sounds like a stupid question, but is it OK to go ahead and move the tree to the side of the trail, or would that theoretically delay the actual cleanup of the trees/sticks from the trail? Meaning, I would assume that someone more official than me would have more of a push to come along and clear the trees if they're actually blocking the trail, than if they were pushed off to the side. So if I were to clear the trail, maybe no one would feel the need to actually come along and clear the trees from alongside the trail...so would it be doing more harm than good to clear?

I did a bad job at asking this question, but I hope it makes sense enough to get an answer.

There are folks on these boards who commute along the trails in the pitch black dark of night. Knowing that I remove anything I see that might hurt them. This way they can devote their full time and attention to dodging Ninja Joggers and Bambi. It hardly seems fair to raise their degree of difficulty without warning. Ice is bad enough.

There was a 2x4 sticking out and blocking about half of the very narrow temporary path over the Humpback Bridge on the MVT last night. I stopped and tried to move it but it was attached to a bunch of other junk that was too heavy for me. I hope nobody hit that mess in the dark....

In other words, just do the right thing (if you can.) I doubt you can shame the maintenance people into doing their job :)
