Little Paint Branch. The trail crosses just to the left of this view but I'm afraid to try that crossing. Honestly, I think I would have a better chance riding across the creek on these rocks, dismounting and scrambling up the bank. It looks very doable but I'm afraid to try that too. I carry my bike over this creek...

I finished this video from a biking trip I made down in the Myrtle Beach area about a week ago. I found it's difficult to get between North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach without having to use US-17, a horrible highway by all standards (some areas have no sidewalks, some areas have no shoulders, 3 lane, 45 mph "optional" speed limit, some stoplights do not have crosswalk buttons, no stoplights detect cyclists), but I did find a couple of nice roads perfect for uninterrupted cycling. Also, getting caught in a downpour was awesome, and I was even treated to a rainbow afterwards! Here's the video:

Note: I have one more video biking on the beach, then I will get to putting together a 50 States Ride video. Hopefully I can get it done this week!

I'd definitely recommend using a rental for this to save the trouble of clean-up. I used my hybrid commuter bike for the ride since I was able to acquire my parents' van to use for bike transport (they drove there in a car for the whole week, whereas I was there for only a couple of days).

Quick tip: Ride into the waves. A lot.

Well ... hmmm. :-) I would be less worried about the $20 chain than the harder-to-service hub bearings, pedal bearings, headset bearings, and bottom bracket. Salt water destroys things quickly (well, anything that is steel, anyway).

That said, riding should be fun. And if the bike wasn't expensive, just treat it as disposable :)

Those are some nice pictures.
Could not have asked for better weather. That was my first time riding that fondo and I can say that has become my favorite ride. I didn't do particularly well for I haven't been training, but wow, what a pretty ride. The gravel highway through Amish country, saying hi to goats and zig zagging across all those rivers made it memorable. That Reddish Knob was painful, but that first gravel bit was absolutely brutal.

I tried to find some of the singletrack that hozn's ridden near my area. Found a bit of it but it's probably better on a MTB than a CX bike with my limited handling skills. The grass/gravel parts were fine though.

Hotels offering loaner bikes to guests is a fantastic idea but I've found reality to fall short of the dream simply because the staff/management are clueless when it comes to maintenance. They think you only need to keep the tires pumped up. All the bikes I've used at hotels were virtually unrideable (though I must give credit to Elements Hotel in NJ management because they immediately called a local bike shop when I pointed out everything wrong with their loaner mtn bikes).

The bike rental shop that recently closed in Crystal City probably missed a good opportunity to provide bikes/maintenance to all of the area hotels.

Just wondering: has this been fixed? Is the MVT (now officially open again) accessible on this stretch?

I've been avoiding that section because I don't know if it's been fixed, and with the shutdown, I figured no work would be done.

I saw drivers detouring onto the sidewalks this month in order to get around the barricades on East Basin Drive and onto Ohio Drive. Clearly they knew the road was closed. Or maybe another secret resolution was passed and car drivers are allowed to use sidewalks during gov't shutdowns.

Thank you both for the update.

Now, I have a new question: who fixed it? I mean, if the MVT was "closed" during the shutdown and the NPS was "trying" to make sure people weren't using it, then why would they bother to fix it (thus allowing people to use the "closed" trail) during the shutdown instead of afterwards?

consularrider
10-17-2013, 12:19 PM
It's not "fixed," but I don't think this section was as damaged as the one by the east end where the tree fell, ie no broken boards. Also the NPS has made no effort that I've seen to discourage MVT use (other than closing parking lots).

It has an electric motor to help with the pedaling, solar panel, and "a lot of other stuff" according to the driver. I just looked at their website wondering if that included regenerative braking, but it does not. Apparently there is some debate about the ability of KERS to significantly improve the efficiency of an e-bike, but this vehicle being heavier than other e-bikes presumably more likely to benefit from implementation of this technology.

I can tell you from a lot of experience and testing, regen braking on an ebike does not increase range. I have two electric motors. One direct drive with regen, and a small geared motor that free wheels. I actually use less watt hours getting to work on the geared motor that free wheels. The main benefit for regen on an ebike is the braking power. It works really well for that, so much that I can get to work without using friction brakes at all, thus increasing the life of brake pads.

With the relative cost of brake pads and battery capacity, I think I'd rather buy brake pads.

WABA was out seeking members during last night's commute.

Rootchopper and Lolly (WABA Membership Coordinator) were helping WABA gain new/renewing members at the foot of the 14th Street Bridge. I stopped for a few minutes and publicized the event with my loudest outdoor voice. They actually got me to renew while I was there.

We were able to get these gents to sign up.

If you are not a member or if your membership will be expiring soon, now is the time to act. Go to WABA.org and join! WABA serves the entire region with rides, training and advocacy for better cycling facilities. The cost of membership pales in comparison to the benefits we receive.

We rode from Oak Marr to Lake Fairfax, some singletrack. It's fine on cross bikes, you just have to pick your lines a little more carefully. Our son rode a hybrid with 700x32 cross tires.

Yeah, I agree with dcv. I ride it on my cross bike with 700x32 tires (tubeless helps avoid pinch flats). It certainly is faster / more care-free on my single speed 29er (especially some of the more technical new trails in Lake Fairfax), but there is nothing better than riding single track on the way to work -- and the mtb would really make a slog of the other 14 miles.

I took Veterans' Day off from work and decided to follow as much of the DC diamond as I could in a clockwise direction, stopping by many of the still-intact boundary stones on the way. The total distance I traveled was 58.7 miles, and that includes getting to/from the diamond. For the most part, mapping the route was fun, using Western, Eastern, and Southern Avenues for much of the MD border and part of King Street for the VA border. That said, the section where I ended up going on Kenilworth Road was not desirable at all, even if there was a sign on the 3 lane "let's go as fast as possible" road that said "Bicycles may use full lane."

I was surprised there are so many stones intact considering that I've passed by a few of them many, many times without even knowing their significance.

(EDIT: Forgot to add this line) Here's the ride on Strava: http://www.strava.com/activities/94573339

The site I used for reference in creating a good route to hit as many boundary stones as possible (and for more information on their history): http://www.boundarystones.org

I would recommend the full ride to anyone who 1) likes scavenger hunts, 2) is comfortable riding with traffic on 35-40 mph speed limits for a few sections of road, and 3) has the stamina for the many hills you will climb on this trip. You could also take smaller sections of this as well.

Ok, buddy and I did a portion of the CCT out near Great falls for the first time, about 25 miles total. It was a great run, but I would have to say, the mountain bike made it a blast. Although I can see it being faster on a cross, picking your lines, the mtb allowed me to say, "f' the lines" and just crank with little thought. My mtb is an old classic beater, and it beat on some trails. I am definitely doing that again.
Thanks for posting that ride and advice!

Thanks for the link. I looked at the differences in my route and the WAGBRAD route, and it looks like among other differences (you have to take East-West Highway in order to be able to access the North cornerstone) they took a less stressful alternative to Kenilworth to get past US-50 and the BW Parkway and a smarter alternative to cutting through the Marlborough House apartment complex (I didn't mention that in order to exit on the south side, which had been locked off, I ended up having to climb over the fence, bike and all).

I started just upstream from the Parklawn pool (near Glasgow Middle School). I had originally planned to start from Columbia Pike when I did a preliminary ride (i.e., started too late in the day and the videos turned out too dark), but the Columbia Pike entrance was closed off at the time so when I came back I started a little farther downstream. Plus, there were signs up saying there had been a sewage leak, so I decided the water crossings weren't the best to be riding in.

36er unicycles can be had for as little as $800... or they could a few years ago. They can cost wayyyyy more than that. My old one was just short of $2500. The bars are functional. They help with steering at speed as well as aerodynamics. They make it more stable because you have more points of contact with the uni. They also give a more modest place to put the brake lever. The other location for the brake lever is under the saddle... it just looks obscene to have to reach between your legs to grab the brake. Full kit is needed for aerodynamics just like on a bike. Some of these have 2-speed internally geared hubs and cruise comfortably at over 20mph. People do endurance rides on them. My buddy Ben (Rod's buddy Ben too) does century rides on his. Most I ever did was about 70 miles.

This photo is time stamped 2:08. I knew the client at 1920 N was getting antsy (ready at 1pm, drop by 3) but I stopped to take this picture anyway because I never get this far west. Dropped 907 North Quincy, 1600 Wilson, 1015 31st, picked up the 4 boxes on N St., dropped 1001 Penn then the boxes at 441 4th at 2:48 with 12 minutes to spare. Sat in the park for 40 minutes getting chilled in my sweaty cotton, then 1001 Penn rush to 1300 Wilson followed by 2639 Conn to 515 15th. 48 miles of trailer hauling on fat tires including commute. A good day on the bike.

Jobs to or from Virginia are exempt from my car job only policy because I'm going there anyway and they pay more than downtown runs. And because they are harder for dispatch to cover but mostly because I'm going there anyway and they pay more. That's why you don't see any cargo here and how I made the deadline. :)

Who do you work for? What do you do? Seems like the best of both worlds. And sheesh, a lot of mileage.

Short haul light freight for Quick Messenger Service. Low pay (commission), no benefits, but I do love the work. If you want a bicyclist to deliver cargo locally that's who you should call, I'm pretty much the only one doing this now. Mike Pierce was doing on-demand deliveries for Best Messenger but I think he's delivering exclusively for Edible Arrangements now. Chris Rabadi has recently started hauling a smaller trailer. I'm not sure who he contracts with or how much of his work is freight.

My morning commute. Left the house early and passed by Swings about 30 minutes before FCC started. Was feeling bummed I missed it then I saw the sunrise on PA Ave. Balance was restored.

Nice pics. I saw that heron (is it specifically a Night Heron?) Thursday and if my reaction time was better I would have stopped to take a picture. They seem to find a good fishing spot and stay there.

Yes. It is a yellow crowned night heron. A bit further down river under the Memorial Bridge there was a large group of Canada Geese likely reconsidering their decision to be non-migratory.

Another run down to the Lost Dog Rescue Adoption event in Hybla Valley (one foster adopted but came home with another foster... sigh... anyone want a two year old lab???). Biked home geocaching along the way, hitting the "Free School (http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4DZRZ_free-school?guid=1787042f-e191-4a96-8fd6-3ffa62770a20)" in Alexandria. This is why I love geocaching. Some of the story from this cache:

Construction of the Alexandria Academy began in September, 1785. The Academy, which opened the following year, was composed a number of smaller schools. The English School taught writing, grammar, math, and science. The Learned Language School taught classical Greek and Latin. In December, 1785, George Washington also endowed a “Free School” at the Alexandria Academy to educate children living in poverty or orphaned by the Revolutionary War. Girls as well as boys were admitted, albeit on the understanding that girls “give place whenever there... be applicants for admittance on behalf of Boys.” The tuition of twenty students was covered by Washington’s annual contributions of 50 pounds. In his will, he left four thousand dollars in stock to run the school. Some historians regard the Alexandria Academy’s Free School as a precursor to American public education.

Perhaps the most famous student of Alexandria Academy was Robert E. Lee, best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War, who attended the school from 1818-1824.
