After the exploration fiasco, I backtracked and took a side "trail." Probably just where a couple people walked their dogs through the long grass. ;)

20134

It took me back to the end of the Rose Field runway and the Nidda. I kept on the single track until I came to the reconstructed bridge to the Eschersheimer Friebad. When the rebuilt the bridge this winter they took out all the bike parking (over 50 inverted U style racks) and haven't replaced them yet. The new bridge opened mid-May, before the pools summer opening.

I had to eat something with Grüne Soße (Quich) and rode a variant of the GrünGürtel

20140 Start of the ride needed to detour, I guess it was time to unload the Toi Tois (Porta Potties) in the Kleingartenverein

20141 Mandatory photo-op at the GrünGürtel flying green armadillo on the Nidda bridge to Maurice Rose Field, Bonames

20142 Frankfurt from the Berger Hang (on the Wanderweg, not the Radweg route)

20143 Schafe mit ein paar Lämmern

20144 I guess they forgot to "rake" this forest like the Finns

I had my Kona Rove modified with a Schmidt SON front dynamo hub and Busch & Müller front and rear lights once I got to Germany. However, battery powered lights have been permitted in Germany since 2017 and I am using those on my road bike and my fat bike. That said I have only seen the "bike police" once in three years and there are lots of people on bikes without lights after dark.

My time in Germany is drawing to a close, but I still have time to get out for some of my favorite rides. Today's photos are outside of Frankfurt loosely following the Nidda River.

20155 In the Pfingstwald near Ober-Eschbach

20156 Looking ENE in the barley files between Nieder-Eschbach, Ober-Eschbach, and Nieder-Erlenbach

20157 Looking West in the barley files between Nieder-Eschbach, Ober-Eschbach, and Nieder-Erlenbach

20158 Grey Heron on the Nidda River near Harheim

20159 Looking NW towards Großer Feldberg from barley field below Frankfurter Berg. This gravel was new this past winter because of some type of work being done along the neighboring railroad tracks, lots of heavy machinery.

I had never ridden Kirby Rd. past the Marie Butler Nature Preserve to 123, but knowing the road was closed so there would be little car traffic and I might be able to ride up the hills without getting run over, I did yesterday, partially to check out the damage.

The barriers they have up are great for stopping cars but are no match for a bicycle:

I've been doing some exploring of New York on bike over the past 10 days, one Borough to go. Here's an unedited video heading up the 1st Ave bike lane (53rd to 59th) in Manhattan and crossing the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge from my Long Island century ride last Thursday. This is with a GoPro Hero 3+. It picks up very little sound other than the pause beep from my Garmin Edge and what sounds like chain noise. The only time you hear my voice is at 10:02 when the three cyclists block the lane during the green light ("Vamanos señores," very faint). I was calling most of my passes and using my bell, something that almost no one seems to do in this area.

Rode in my 5th NYC Borough today, Staten Island. Seems like the only bike access (other than during 5 Boros) is by the Staten Island Ferry. I was trying to do a complete circle tour of the island, but I couldn't tell if I could ride the 440 shoulder for the bridge over Fresh Kills (kinda ominous name that) and the service road really didn't look open at the transfer station, so I missed the southern half of the island.

20358 Ghost Bike on the Hudson River Greenway at Chelsea for a rider killed in 2006. I also saw a ghost bike on Staten Island. A 21st cyclist was killed in NYC Labor Day weekend.

20359 Staten Island Ferry bike accommodation.

2036020360 Finally found some gravel in NYC, La Tourette Park Greenway on Staten Island

20361 At Battery Hudson, Ft Wadsworth with the Verranzo Narrows Bridge

20362 At Ft Wadsworth looking across Weed Battery towards Manhattan.

In the 1970s, when people were complaining that there was no bike route from Brooklyn to SI, because Robert Moses built the Verrazano Narrows Bridge without bike/ped accommodations, the MTA ran some buses with the rear seats taken out to provide room for bikes. I took one of these the one and only time I biked on SI.

I assume there is probably a bus with bike racks on the front running Bklyn to SI these days?

I am glad you are exploring all over NYC. Its really a much more beautiful city than its given credit for, and some of the most amazing places are in the outer boros. And autumn is my favorite time of year in NYC.

Today I tried to ride the full Manhattan Island "Circle" (https://www.strava.com/activities/2680104928) staying on the river front. It pretty much works on the Hudson River, but not so well above 37th St on the East/Harlem Rivers side.

20363 One of three closed off sections of the Bobby Wagner Walk along the Harlem River

20364 Paths in the Inwood Hill Park, north end of Manhattan. Most are paved, some used to be paved, tough on a road bike.

20365 Hudson River and George Washington Bridge

20366 Hudson River Greenway next to Riverbank State Park

20367 Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges over the East River

Check out the Alice Austen house -- it's only a mile or two from the ferry.

You can get down to the south end of the island (Conference House Park is pretty nice) via Hylan Blvd, and back via Arthur Kill Blvd. Don't go near 440 except to cross over the Bayonne Bridge. You can get to Staten Island via ferry from lower Manhattan to Jersey City, and then ride down to the bridge. Not tremendously scenic (except for the ferry crossing) or agreeable, but doable.

BTW, "kill" comes from old Dutch meaning "creek". But that doesn't stop residents of Philadelphia from dubbing the Schuylkill expressway the "Sure Kill".

This past Saturday, I was able to give yet another DC-area bicycle friend a nice bike tour of the Seattle area. This time, it was scoot who joined me for a ride through the rain starting in Bellevue and crossing Lake Washington not once but twice along the way. I unfortunately had 3 flats (2 before we met up, ugh), the 1st and 3rd being due to a piece of glass that apparently had left an even smaller piece for later.

We were caught in the rain the entire time in Bellevue, but once we made it through Mercer Island and across Lake Washington into Seattle, things had mostly cleared up. We rode many, many of the PBL's in downtown Seattle including some busy commuter routes. It was surprisingly a nice weather day considering it's mid-October here (beginning of "The Grey" where everything will mostly be overcast and somewhat rainy until May).

scoot crossing the 5th longest floating bridge in the world on the I-90 Trail on Lake Washington; selfie time on the José Rizal Bridge with a nice view of downtown Seattle

20454
Tourist attractions: Pike Place Market, Space Needle, & Amazon Spheres

20455
Cascade Bicycle Club and Seattle Neighborhood Greenways were celebrating 1 million bike crossings of the popular Fremont Bridge (scoot and I were 1,000,399th and 1,000,400th to cross this year)

20456
At the local Google office; always nice views of the Seattle skyline and Lake Union from Gas Works Park

20457
Crossing the 520 Bridge, the longest floating bridge in the world, as we left Seattle and headed back towards Bellevue

Oh, random thing, I'll be back in the DC area for a week in early November. See y'all then!

I'm in Belfast, Northern Ireland for a couple of days and since there's been decent weather, I rented a bike mostly riding along the Lagan River/Canal Towpath (https://discovernorthernireland.com/Lagan-Towpath-P15494/).

20479 Norm's (in Smithfield Market) facilitated the rental of a Fuji Absolute hybrid from Belfast City Bike Tours

20480 One of the Royal Bank of Scotland funded mileposts for the National Cycling Network (https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network/), this one from Route 9.

20482 Hey Steve O, should they remove these useless bollards?

20483 drevil, you want to hop this one? No, I did not ride down this path, it's for walkers.

You stay much MUCH warmer when running than when riding. I ran to work this morning (23F) in light tights and a wool base layer on top and was quite toasty (except for my fingers). When I ran to work last week (43F), I wore shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt and was almost too warm.

This is all exceedingly true yet that dude had no shirt at 47 degrees. I ran a marathon at about that temp and yup there were shirts involved, partially because pinning the number to my chest woulda hurt otherwise, granted.

I made an updated version of my "Bike the Metro: Silver Line Extension" video from 2015 using the footage I gathered while biking the route this past spring. I threw in some comparison shots to show how construction and the surrounding area has changed between 2015 and 2019. It was much easier figuring out where Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn stations are going to be located this time around since they actually have structures built.

It's nice to have a DC-area bike video to work on from time to time :D

My default ride here in New York is loops of the Central Park 6.05 mile circuit. I filmed in mid-November morning on a chilly day with fewer tourists. I'm using an older GoPro Hero 3+ which reset at 20 minutes, so the ride is in two files. The circuit goes counterclockwise and I enter and leave the Park at the E 90th St entrance. Central park is now almost car-free, just park and police vehicles. The road is divided into three segments, the left for walkers/runners, center for cyclists, and the right for motor vehicles. The walker/runner segment is bi-directional, the other tow are supposed to be one way, which is generally respected.

Earlier this week, I was interviewed for a news segment regarding bicycle riders and the light rail in Seattle. Sound Transit (aka our WMATA) is working on a second line to the light rail that will go out to Bellevue and Redmond in 2023 (btw yes, Microsoft laid out some cash to help make sure its employees had a faster way to get to work at its HQ).

While normally bicycles are allowed on all light rail trains (they even have 2 bike hooks per train car, and the new trains will have 4 per car with more interior space in general), during this project bicycles will be prohibited at one particular station (Pioneer Square Station which is downtown), and bicycle riders must get off on the previous station and ride to the one after (University Street Station or International District-Chinatown Station). Luckily, our DOT was able to finish a continuous, 2-way protected bike lane (2nd Ave PBL Extension) that connects these two stations that are only about 3/4 mile apart.

Since I bring my bicycle on the light rail sometimes (usually if I'm out late, am really tired, or running late to a weekend event), KIRO7 News did an interview with me. They even did some action shots of me riding in one of the protected bike lanes in downtown. It was fun (even though I was nervous)!

Here's the news segment:

Here's the accompanying news article: https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/crowding-short-term-bike-ban-coming-light-rail-prepares-construction/4C4I4PQUMJG4ZAWHRDINTSZHTE/

P.S. - riding from my apartment in Tukwila to downtown Seattle is like riding from the Landmark area to Dupont Circle (somewhere around 12-13 miles, around an hour)

Strava says that I logged my 30,000th all time mile (so it must be true) on Saturday while attending the “Why We Cycle” documentary and panel discussion w/ @CBGanimal & her daughter, Sierra, at NE Library at Capitol Hill.
.
I’m tempted to dig out my pre-GPS cycling logs from when I tracked my miles using an abacus, a piece of slate, and a burnt stick from from the morning fire pit, so that I can sum up my lifetime miles on a bike.
