View Full Version : bike to work day and me

I've never ridden my bike to work.

I have made it my goal to do so on BTWD.

Living in Annandale, working at the Navy Yard, and being a slow rider (I do not ride regularly and am not yet particularly fit, I ride an old MTB with knobby tires, etc) I am ruling out riding the entire way.

Usually I commute by express bus to the Pentagon, then Yellow to L'Enfant, then Green line.

I COULD ride the streets of Annandale to get to a location where more express bus routes come together.

Or I could take the express bus to Pentagon, and then bike in - using the bike to avoid the whole Yellow - Green line annoyance. Thats actually what I would prefer doing, and I have test ridden that route (on a Sunday, using the local bus).

my understanding is that the only pit stop along my route would be the one at Canal Park, for which I should register. There do not seem to be any convoys planned for any part of this route - but my impression is that there are often lots of people biking across the 14th street bridge, and the there are lots of people who bike through SW DC to the Navy Yard area. I would hope to encounter a bunch of cyclists on BTWD, maybe even some going relatively slowly.

I note that its a Friday. If I didn't reverse that course home, but say went (via bike or metro/bike intermodal combo) to say Old Town to meet my wife for dinner, or to our synagogue (located off a sharrows in Alexandria) for services would that still be in the spirit of BTWD? Even if I left the bike there over friday night, say?

My take is that any amount of biking --regardless of whether or not its bike-only or part of a well planned multi-modal commute-- on BTWD is certainly in the spirit of the endeavour. Fast or slow doesn't matter. Spending time on two non-motorized wheels is the important thing.

I agree with Bilsko. Do what you can do.

Pentagon express busses are a good idea for the morning, as is Old Town in the evening. It's also a nice ride home to Falls Church if you want her to meet you there.

Another pit stop option is the Crystal City Waterpark stop at 18th and Crystal Drive. From the bus station at the Pentagon it might be the easiest way onto the MVT.

Any distance on a bike contributes to fitness and serves to add to the critical mass of cyclists. Do what works and be proud. We are glad to have you!

Just so you know, some of us make it something of a holiday and never actually get to work. One of the best days of leave I've taken.

Remind us you are looking for a convoy or fellow cyclist that week and someone may be available. ;)

This. If you're up to it by then, I'd be glad to roll from Annandale with you.

I know its a bit north of you, but I've been leading a convoy from the providence rec center for the past few years and would be happy to have you along.

I can meet up with you guys near falls church and roll all the way to the navy yard.

If you want a good practice run we could do it some Friday for coffee club.

I can also meet you at the pentagon to roll over to the yard.

The morning is the best time for biking. Riding in the morning gets the blood moving and wakes the body up. I always feel refreshed after my ride and am ready to go to work. I find that I have energy throughout the day instead of losing steam in the afternoon.
