Arlington County Department of Environmental Services – Transportation Planning Bureau has created an interactive Bike Network planning map as part of an effort to collect public input on the preferred and alternative alignments within the project study area around Columbia Pike. The input will assist the project team in assessing alternative alignments, and potential alignment opportunities and constraints. The plan will serve as a roadmap for improvements to make bicycling parallel to Columbia Pike safer and to encourage more riders in the area.

The interactive planning map has been created using a mapping tool called CommunityWalk. CommunityWalk’s interface is user-friendly and similar to interfaces of other online mapping tools (e.g. Google Maps, Yahoo Maps). Basic instructions are provided in the upper left-hand corner of the page. If you have any questions about how to use the map, please send an E-mail to Dan Biggs at dbiggs@tooledesign.com.

Thank you for helping us create a Parallel Bike Network along the Columbia Pike Corridor!

Playing with the on-line map may also raise the question whether the Arlington Bike Map should also add in the Sixth Street route skirting around the National Foreign Affairs Training Center and running through Fort Myer. While the route on 8th Street is perfectly acceptable, I personally disliked the steeper hills and extra cars around George Mason and 8th Street on that route. Until something better comes along, the Sixth Street route would be my preferred bike route to bypass the Columbia Pike congestion.
