Are any of the group rides still going on during the winter?
Thanks

Hi Jason, I think I saw another post similar a while back, and I think the consensus was the most shop rides continue through the winter. For example, I know Proteus (http://www.proteusbicycles.com) (College Park MD) will have easy and intermediate rides all winter on weekends. Potomac Pedalers (http://www.potomacpedalers.org/) does a Friday ride in my area through the winter if the weather's good I think. Bicycle Space (http://www.bicyclespacedc.com/) (DC) seems to have an active ride schedule -- they have a cupcake ride etc. So I think while there aren't many big supported rides going, there are lots of smaller rides available.

CycleLife is still running a Saturday AM ride from their shop, meet at 8:30 and roll out at 9am. I've not yet done it because I'm not certain they won't rip my face off up the hills. I need to HTFU and get out there.

Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling will be hosting rides throughout the winter and spring. Keep an eye out on http://www.fabb-bikes.org/events.html or http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/ . I know we'll be doing a historical marker ride, route TBD. We'll probably do a Reston Town Center to Udvar Hazy Museum (Air and Space Museum in Chantilly) ride again in the spring.

I'm trying to organize some kind of Cargo Bike ride as well. They'll be some sort of non-profit or public service tie-in (delivering something to someone by bike?).

Does anyone have rides that they'd like to see FABB do in 2013?

Tri360 is doing hill rides on Saturday mornings at 8:30. They said they'd continue to hold them through the winter until people stopped showing up.

I heard that the Coppi ride leaving from JavaShack on Sunday at 8:30 is still on.

I've done that ride from their Reston shop. When I went the group was pretty big, I think we averaged about 19 mph around Reston.

I'd love to see some confidence building rides like:
1. Ride in the Tysons Corner area safely.
2. Ride in Fairfax City safely
3. Ride in Annandale with confidence

I believe there are novice cyclists out there who would like to explore safe routes but don't feel like they have the skills to choose or navigate a route safely. Personally, it took me three weekends of trial and error to find a way into Tysons that I am comfortable-ish doing. But it is hard to figure these things out on your own, especially if you don't have a lot of street riding experience. I know it's not FABB's jurisdiction but one of the first things I wanted to learn was how to ride safely into and out of DC. It does not seem like a challenge to most of the people on this forum but the first time I rode across the Memorial and Key Bridges I was fairly frightened. Having a guide makes all the difference.

I think riding Tyson's safely requires more than confidence--like maybe new infrastructure. I was over at the mall with the kids this weekend, and I was scared enough in the car.

There is a back way into Tysons I off of Gallows Road involving a flyover ramp. But it took me a long time to figure out a route from my house because a cut-through trail linking two residential neighborhoods is not evident from driving.

The longer I play on bikes the more fun I have trying to figure out ways to get from point A to point B without performing a death defying act. I won't ride down Route 123 towards McLean, but I see cyclists out there everyday.

I'm not sure I'm ever going to be prepared for a hill ride that you recommend.

My rule is not to go to the Tysons Malls between Thanksgiving and New Years. I was stuck in a parking garage waiting in a queue to exit for 45 minutes one year on Dec 26th. Never again. I'll wait until I can metro there (next year?).

Is there a strava or Garmin of this route? I'm a little nervous to get on a group ride with a bunch of KOM junkies.

found it

Was that December 26, 2009? If so, I was in that line too. As a result, I pretty much stopped going to Tysons at all, any time of the year, even though it is only two or three miles from my house. But now that through FABB, I'm going to learn acc's secret bike route, maybe I can go there again!

I'd say that with the current range of fitness levels that show up, it's an easier ride than both Freshbikes or Revolutions hill rides. They have a couple different people leading at various speeds.

I used to work out there so I know the super secret parking spaces that are easy to dart in and out of!

The only reason I overcame my aversion to riding around in Tysons was to liberate myself from the car dealership waiting room. I used to sit in that room without windows listening to a 24-hour "all sports and nothing but sports" cable channel. I couldn't get any work done because the cell phone call conversations going on around me were more interesting than anything in my life.

The staff is very friendly to me now that I've started rolling my bike in and out.

Eminva, you know we can get to Nordstrom Rack a lot easier than Tysons. We don't even have to cross Route 7.

I can do that! :p Won't be this Saturday though since I plan on joining Wreaths Across America laying 100,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetary starting at 9:30 am (http://www.arlnow.com/2012/12/11/volunteers-to-place-wreaths-on-veterans-graves/).
