I am looking for a used bicycle in decent condition to use for commuting in all conditions (that means I can put a fatter tire on for winter). I'm a 5' 4" female. I prefer a more upright position but I can always change the handlebars. No need for suspension or bells and whistles. Just a solid commuter.

Have you tried Phoenix Bikes yet? http://www.phoenixbikes.org/

VeloCity (in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria) is a coop that sells affordable bikes as well. It is not far from Phoenix Bikes so you should pick a time to visit that both are open

Yes to Phoenix and to Velocity. There is a guy who sells bikes out of the back of his truck at the Court House Farmers Market. The guys at Phoenix spoke well of him. Apparently he has rented space at Pershing and Washington Blvd, near the old Whiteys (see if anyone remembers Whiteys) - where he is gonna set up a used bike shop - he is apparently just waiting on Arlington to clear his permits.

Phoenix has show and tell hours Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. It can be a little hit or miss. I just picked up a tall Trek from Phoenix as a sort of back up beater bike.

The thing about Phoenix and Velocity - you are not buying a used bicycle - you are buying a rehabed bicycle. They will have gone over the bicycles completely - checked the brakes - tires - cables - whatever. You might pay a little bit more from them than you would from say Craigslist - but you are getting a bike that is in good working condition. (and you are supporting a pretty cool Arlington youth organization)

Yep, it's "The Old Bike Shop." Hopefully it opens soon!

Saw the FB page. Any insight on what the hold up is? I know that many small businesses curse at Arlington government for the difficulties they have had..... but on the other hand I also know that many of the small businesses that cursed were trying to scape goat their own failings onto the government. Would be interested to know what is going on.

Tallulla is nice, but I miss Whitey's. Used to go there after softball my first few years on DC.

I will most definatley support Pheonix. I wish there was such a thing in my area. Wee do have used bikes and a shop that builds them but they are more of brolovefest. If yer not in the brolovefest clique all one can do is buy a bike.
For me cycling is more than just transportation. It's about building community and humility, spirituality and contemplative living.
I have actually considered relocating to an area that supports this philosophy and has a real bike collective.

Tallulla is nice, but EatBar is better. Hooray for cartoon breakfasts

Thanks for all the love folks. We love bros. We love sheila's, too. Check out the post at the top. We'll be in DC this Saturday selling bikes, 10-2p at the Big Bear Cafe, 1700 1st street NW.

The Old Bike Shop officially opened a few days ago. Article: http://clarendon.patch.com/articles/the-old-bike-shop-opens-in-arlington

I hesitated to post this as I'm a supporter of the Velocity bike coop in Alexandria http://velocitycoop.org Velocity also fixes up bikes and sells them. I'm convinced that both Velocity and The Old Bike Shop will succeed. Spreading the word about both will just get more and more people biking.

FYI Velocity is a great place to learn to fix your bike. It's open 7 days. Volunteers will teach you how to fix your bike. The only cost is a $10/hour fee to use their bike stands, tools, lube, etc. Beats dropping a bike off at a bike shop, waiting 1-2 weeks for it to get fixed (in the summer), then having to go back to the shop to pick it up.

I went to Velocity in the Fall with a problem that I was having trouble solving. The staff was fantastic. Not only did the problem get fixed, but the staff was great at teaching me how to fix the problem myself. Very pleased with the experience (and ice cream across the street!!!)
