I always seem to see interesting bicycles on my commute home along Fairfax Drive. Last month I saw a unicycle that someone had locked to a meter. Yesterday, and again this morning I saw this bike:

164

Pretty nice piece of engineering--although I'm pretty sure it would be illegal to ride most everywhere! (not a bike and not quite a motorcycle...)

There is - believe it or not - another very similar bike in Arlington. I've seen the guy locking it up once, and really regret not stopping and asking him about it. Never heard it in action, though.

My neighbor bought a kit and converted a one-speed bike the same way. I guess it makes it a scooter. He could still pedal, and needed to, so he and the little motor were working together.

They're pretty loud. At least the two that I've heard. There's a guy in the neighborhood in Falls Church who has one. It moves pretty well. Sounds like a weed whacker on steroids.

I got a few interesting comments when I rode my unicycle to the Metro last winter in a snow storm. Need to see if I can hook up a moped motor to it. ;) NOT

There was a guy cruising around Adams Morgan and Mt Pleasant a few weeks ago on one of these. It was VERY loud. I could hear it from blocks away. I wonder if you have to wear ear plugs while riding it.
