<BAt signal>

So on the glorified sidewalk called the Custis trail in Rosslyn, there are now two pavement issues between Nash and Oak that basically take the most crowded part of the path down to one lane. At first it seemed like the powers that be were working on fixing the issues, but I believe it's been a week with no progress on either. What's going on?

Get it? BAt signal? For BikeArlington? Ok, I'm punchy.

There are a couple of big holes in the concrete between Veitch and Oak, partially covered by a traffic cone in the middle of the path. The cone can only be passed on the curb side, though, because of the size of the path damage.

Maybe I'm imagining it, but didn't they remove the electrical box thingy at the stop light at Nash? I wonder if the work up at Oak is part of that as well...

There are two spots: one just East of the intersection of Lee & Oak. There one rectangle of sidewalk concrete juts up about 6". There are about 3 cones on top of it, basically cutting off the entire Westbound lane of the Custis.

The other is about 3/4 of the way between Oak and Nash/the back exit from the Marriott parking lot. (So if that block is 100 yds long, about 25 yards from Nash, 75 from Oak). It's a dirt hole, that I think used to partly be an box of some sort. Clearly, there should be a new sidewalk rectangle put in - it drops a few inches, into nasty looking mud. There's a cone in that one too, at the moment, again cutting off the entire Westbound lane.

There had been work at both of these spots (last week?), and I thought they were going to continue the work to fix the sidewalk. But it's been long enough with no progress, that I worry they're not coming back. Also, unlike many sidewalks in Arlington, where it may be acceptable to leave half the sidewalk torn up for weeks at a time, this is a really busy part of the Custis, and really should be fixed asap.

It may have just been too wet to pour concrete this week. The sidewalk project on my street made not a peep of activity all week until today - finally realized it was probably because concrete can't cure in the rain.

Still waiting on confirmation, but it sounds like it might be a fiber optic contractor that has been doing work around the county. I'll pass along details if I hear anything.

Isnt this part of VDOT's work, and that extremely impressive and useful electronic traffic sign they are installing?

If you look at the sidewalk, VDOT has marked where they are going to rip it up - or have ripped it up - to install new junction boxes.

There temporary covers over there work are horrific and will bend a bike tire rim.

Latest is that everything should be patched for now and that there will be more work starting on Monday morning.

Feel free to pass along photos of any sections that need better work done.

The plywood on the Custis near Key Bridge Marriott doesn't seem to pose much challenge to cyclists, but I saw a few runners come close to face planting this morning while taking this photo:

That was a nice smooth bounce I got rolling over that this morning.

This morning they were scary. The boards are NOT held down with anything, gaps had formed and the plywood has warped making them pretty bumpy. It would be good if a better fix was done soon. Other than that this stretch of trail is super fluffy. ;)

Be careful y'all!

I'll send along another poke.

I stopped and pushed the boards back together to get rid of the gaps. After 3 bikes rolled over it, the gaps were back.

Thank you, Tim!

It's probably more of the fiber optic work. It's been passed along to the contractor in charge.

I noticed that the plywood of eternal peril has been replaced.

They did an awesome job of replacing the hole too.

There's a fun sign at Fort Myer/Custis saying something about "CONSTRUTION" right now. I stared at it for a while as I waited for the light on the way home today.

I've been wondering about the markings along the sidewalk all through that intersection. are we going to be seeing a lot of digging this winter?
