Does anyone know what the deal is with the Bike Summit 2012 ride on Friday 3/23? It is on the agenda but no details that I could find. I would really like to take Friday off from work for that.

I have it on my radar, but haven't seen details yet. I'll ask my summiting friends and see what they know.

There's no announcement yet, but for your planning purposes: plan to start very near the Capitol around 8:30. Easy pace 10 miler (or so).

I'll post the final details here when they're ready.

I'm planning to hit the ride right from my commute and just be an hour or so late for work that day. I'll have my GoPro!

Thank you, sir. I'll be there. I may not be too fluffy, but I'll be there. :D

Yup, but I will have ridden over 600 miles in the 6 previous days combined with 2-15 hour days in the office. I'm predicting that my legs and brain may have that not-so-fresh feeling. I'll be there. I'll be pink.

Nah. I actually want to be awake for this ride. I might snooze on the ride downtown though.

Just got a League of American Bicyclists email and it had this:

We'd like to invite everyone to join the fun finale to the summit, the National Bike Summit Congressional Bike Ride - Friday, March 23rd 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Meet at Garfield Circle, Capitol Hill by 8:15 a.m. for a tour of DC and its bike infrastructure led by our friends at WABA.

Guess the destination and route is a surprise. I'm guessing they will highlight various cycle tracks, show off all the Capital Bikeshare stations, etc. If you want to join the group in progress -- just look for a giant mob of cycling advocates on wheels.

Ha, that shouldn't be too hard to spot. I put in for Friday off from work so I'll be there.

So I guess this means they plan to be up on the Hill somewhere at 11:00. I can probably sneak out of work for the grand arrival on the Hill since I work down the street but can't join the ride :( If anyone gets a definite time/meeting spot for the end of the ride, please post.

Okay. I'm gonna end up missing this ride after all. I got recalled to the Mothership for a day and will be out of town. Crapsky. I wanted to do this.

Rock on kids! Have fun with it.

I know DC is very proud of the 15th st cycletrack, but riding southbound on it tuesday afternoon with the TJROW folks, I was a bit ashamed. I don't often use that north/south corridor, but I forgot how poor the pavement quality is and how narrow the lanes are. Not to mention the awful signal timing. At least the Penn Ave lanes are a bit smooother and the lights are timed a bit better. Those are OK to show off, provided you have a nice view of the Capitol and you don't get hit by a U-turning taxi.

I kinda thought that too before doing TJROW. We saw MUCH, MUCH Worse. I particularly enjoyed the stutter bumps approaching I street heading south. I rode those 5 times on Tuesday. :D It was like a good massage. :D

I was wondering about that since the TJROW folks in the back with me kept saying how nice and amazing it was. Granted, by that point we were passing the White House and turning on to Penn Ave.

Was there a best of/worst of road conditions that really stand out from the entire trip? In my mind, it's all rolling country roads between the big cities.

I may ride by the Capitol around lunch as I'll be getting out of another NBS event across town and heading over near the ballpark. I'll swing by if there's a crowd. Tomorrow's going to be a little toasty outside, so leave those high-vis jackets at home.

Because I'm too lazy to go look things up for myself...
Any idea when the ride will circle back to the Captiol and how long they plan on being there?

Yesterday, a delegation representing Virginia cyclists paid visits to eleven House Representatives and our two Senators. Allen Muchnick led the effort, organized the appointments, and presented our case. Many thanks to Allen for representing Virginia with such a high level of professionalism. I won't even complain about running up and down multiple flights of stairs in high-heels because he did such a great job. Other familiar faces who joined in the handshaking, and arm-twisting included some of the usual suspects from these boards including; Tim Kelley, Zanna Leigh, and Mark Blacknell. Also present were Jim Strang from Spokes, Angela Parrotta from Revolution Cycles, Burton Griffith and Dean Liao.

But the fun did not end there. You know how bike people are, it isn't an event unless there's riding and it isn't riding unless there are several hundred people involved. This morning, despite revelry that continued late into the evening before (let me stipulate for the record that I do not have firsthand knowledge about that, but I heard *rumors*), riders from all over the country jumped on borrowed, begged, owned, or rented bikes for a memorable ride through the streets of Washington, DC.

Over the course of about ten miles I met people from Portland, Oregon; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Santa Barbara, California; Miami, Florida; and Providence, Rhode Island. But truly the best part was seeing local riders out in force cheering on their counterparts from other states and extending hospitality.

It was nice to hear that our bike infrastructure is admired and our Capital Bikeshare program is enjoyed.

It was a terrific ride, the weather was wonderful and WABA did first rate job organizing and making the ride run smoothly. Everyone came back in one piece.

Happy Bike Summit Trails,

A fine time was had by all. Numerous opportunities to chat and compare notes. BikeArlington was well represented.

As one might imagine, Ann and her helmet were oft noted.

While I am a bit embarrassed to 'fess up, much of the ride was as new for me as it was for our guests. Thanks to Mark and WABA for showing me a new part of my community.

The swing by the baseball stadium allowed the riders to see the "Bike Valet" parking area.
