...always take the rain shell (or even water-resistant shell) on days when it is chilly and there is a chance of rain. The good news is the rain was light yesterday afternoon (Arlington/Falls Church), and was snow by the time I hit my Ashburn-Leesburg leg (after the West Falls Church Metro to Ashburn bus ride). I didn't see the shell in my usual place in the morning and assumed it was in the car, and many other things were on my mind. After driving over Catoctin Ridge and stopping to start my bike commute on the east side of Leesburg, a quick search of the car proved no shell was extant there. The next question was - "do it drive most of the way in and bike a short distance?"

I decided to bike my planned route, as the effects I would experience would give greater clarity to my morning preparation routine. And I believe that has proven to be the right choice...

btw, biking is snow is a beautiful experience, especially knowing that it was not going to stick during the commute and having a visor that kept snow out of my eyes (it normally keeps the sun out too).

It always seems like such a smarter idea AFTER the fact, doesn't it? We're so much smarter in retrospect.:)

I've done the same thing... looked at a layer in the car and said "Naaaaah, don't need it" and then as my teeth are chattering three miles later it sure *seemed* like a good idea to leave it at the time!

I went to leave the office yesterday and only then first noticed the wet outdoors. I'd figured earlier that it would have been long gone by the evening commute, but no! it wanted to stick around to greet me. I keep the water 'n wind breaker in the bike bag, but not the pants, so it was a wet 1.5 miles. Never trust the forecasters.

I did this on a ride home last year when I was in no hurry to get home...biked in the snow (granted, it was just flurries, but still...) from down near the Capitol all the way home to Bethesda....the ride down PA Avenue was simply amazing....gorgeous.
