Sometimes I see ride pictures posted by forum members and I know exactly where they are. I love looking for excuses to post picts of my bikes.

Guess where this is, then post one of yours. I'll start with an easy one:

As it is your game, I'll let you define the rules regarding the specificity of the answer.

I'm waiting for someone else who knows the answer, or I go out riding this afternoon to try and find the exact spot.

Isn't that a new underpass ... Under the MVT... leading to the Columbia (?) marina? I think that is what it is called...right near the Humpback Bridge.

Judging from the location of the Jefferson memorial, Ohio Dr inlet and what looks like part of the 14th bridge I'd say that's a good guess. dbb?

Bing-bing-bing! We have a winner! It is the south tunnel under the Humpback Bridge leading to the bike trail to nowhere (about half way around the Pentagon Lagoon along I395)

Great guess. I think you're right, I googled silver comet trail and it shows the exact same tunnel picture. CCrew, that's too hard - you have to keep it local so we can have a chance at guessing.

Right you are!

Sorry I didn't include my bike in the photo. Sometimes the Key Bridge is a three ring circus in the morning between bikes, pedestrians and random folks walking three or four abreast so I didn't want to add to the chaos by setting up a shot with bike. Also, then you really wouldn't have been able to see the river in the background.

I do have some shots with bike -- will try to dig them up here . . .

That looks more like a storm sewer than a tunnel, i image it floods a lot?

I don't know how others do it but I set up a photobucket account to store pictures, then I insert photos as a URL link. Whenever I upload photos directly from my computer it shows up as a thumbnail.

No, but you are not the first one to think that. It is a Jamis (http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/thebikes/road/eclipse/10_eclipse.html). Which I have rendered undiginfied by the addition of so much commuter kitch. But I don't have space for a whole stable of bikes, so the ones I've got have to do double or triple duty.

Today I did not ride to work but threw my bike in the back of my car because arriving at GMU after 11:00 means you park in the next county. It was terrific to jump on my bike and get around campus quickly and my messenger bag only tried to strangle me twice.

Good place to be aware of your surroundings. It will become more familiar to people once the bridge over the train tracks opens, but won't really be useful unless we can rely on the WNY connection.

Although it is subject to closing, which makes it potentially difficult to rely on, I think it's easier to just ignore the WNY Riverwalk and take M Street SE. That pesky "No bike riding, rollerblading, skateboarding, or scooter use permitted." rule means it quicker to take M Street SE.

DSalovesh

That pesky "No bike riding, rollerblading, skateboarding, or scooter use permitted." rule means it quicker to take M Street SE.

Probably, for biking, and in that case I wouldn't use the path in the picture - I'd simply stay by the tracks on M.

But (kinda off-topic for a bike forum I guess) I run there pretty often to connect RFK to Nationals Stadium. It's kinda demoralizing to take Water Street to O, turn left down toward the WNY Riverwalk and find the gate locked with no notice. If they'd simply put a status sign there I'd at least know what to expect...

And M St. has pretty narrow sidewalks that are well used by people heading to and from the Navy Yard. If I'm running with my dog - as I often am because of my unease about the current state of the trail - when I find the gate locked I cut my run short and head home.

I think the Anacostia Waterfront projects would all do better if they included a reliable connection across the WNY Riverwalk. Routing people up to M St. doesn't provide that, IMHO.

I do not follow it, so I don't know if it is useful or not, but they do mention a Twitter feed on the official web page:

"Connect to the WNY Riverwalk's Official Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/WNYRiverwalk) page for real-time news and up to date operating hours."

I agree, M Street is not an ideal solution for runners/walkers.

I don't believe so. I'll check tomorrow when I ride in. The building isn't super special, but the lights are pretty unique. The building is surrounded by them. They're kind of a modern design. It is either a place that you want to or don't want to hang out when there are big protests.

I think that's the Watergate, but I've never seen it that early in the morning...

Is there a point at which we should reveal our spots, if no one has gotten it?

That pic with the overlook is killing me, but I'm not going to get it if I have more time.

I don't believe so. I'll check tomorrow when I ride in. The building isn't super special, but the lights are pretty unique. The building is surrounded by them. They're kind of a modern design. It is either a place that you want to or don't want to hang out when there are big protests.

IMF? I got it from your hint.

BTW, the new IMF president said she wanted to commute by bike before she came here. Wonder if she's doing it?

Yup! It is the IMF. :D The building is kinda cool in a lot of ways. I like the stuff at street level. The lights and stone work are nicely executed.

/edit - WAIT! It's from Jackson Ave in Ft Myer looking down the hill at the city.

Got it! It's my favorite part of my commute home because it's the TOP of the very big hill that really starts down by 110. I hate that hill. I pretend it's three hills (you go up from 110, come down after the Iwa Jima, go up to the gate to get on base then it flattens out before the really brutal, last gasp, curvy hill that led me to invent a hill-song). But I've started to love getting to the top, glancing back at the city, and loving my commute (and then booking it over to the Henry gate before it closes). With the nights starting later, I almost feel like I'm going to miss the dark depths of winter. Almost.

Maybe we should start a "favorite place on our commutes" photo album/thread

A quick review of the forum suggests this thread is the second most replied thread on the forum at 101 replies (the highest seems to be 125 replies on the lights for bikes thread). It may also have the highest reply density (replies/day) as well as a very high reply/view ratio.

no, the "other side" meaning the grating on the left side; and the "other side" meaning behind me the bridge ends in a T. there is a ramp down to the right and stairs to the left. in the middle of the T there is a bar one must navigate. the bar is a safety measure to keep people from riding up the ramp and going down the stairs.

Yep, MVT looking east from a few hundred yards south of the Memorial Bridge. Hard to tell, but a number of the geese in the picture were actually mooning the camera...

I admit this one is pretty tough so I'll give a few more clues. It's near a church and if this bike symbol was just a few symbols to the east, he would have lost a lot more than just his helmet!

Hah... I found it, or at least another helmetless bike symbol. Westbound Fairfax Drive right before Wakefield. I think it's trying to tell us that we should take off our helmets so we can truly experience the transition of death onto the Fairfax-Custis connector.

My bad. All the bike stencils on the bike lanes on Fairfax west of Glebe are a different design: fat head and no helmet.

However, commuting in with the standard Thursday morning hangover at 5 mph, my nose barely off the pavement, I did find the correct answer. Eastbound Fairfax at Oakland!

You got it! Right by San Jose Episcopal Church, and just a few blocks up there is another symbol whose head is completely gone, and the symbol only has half a rear wheel.

SRAM makes them for their double-tap levers. They come in a kit with matching bar tape. The bar tape is some of the best I've used. Any SRAM dealer can easily get this for you.

Thanks! I'm not supposed to have favorite children... but this one is definitely it.... though this week's build will be pretty high on my list of great bikes.

This thread reminds me of a scavenger hunt. I organized a bike/walk one years ago. You had to find certain clues around town to decode a message. (Some genius guy who was a physicist figured it out an hour before everyone else. Lesson - don't invite really really smart people). We should organize something like that.

It was 100 yards of squishy grass. The best reason to ride the cross bikes is because they had tires that could deal with the amazing volumes of broken glass that make up the road surface in many parts of DC. People in SE have always been SUPER nice and very polite to me when we've ridden through. Much nicer than any other part of the area. Unfortunately there's a lot of broken glass around to dodge. Having something like Marathon Extremes or Armadillos is kind of a necessity.
