View Full Version : Bicycle Light giveaway this afternoon in Tysons Corner

11-22-2011, 09:50 AM
FABB will be giving away bicycle lights to those who need them at LLBean in Tysons Corner today from 2:30 to 5pm. We've put out the word to service workers at Tysons Mall to bring their bikes to the parking lot entrance of LLBean. We will install a set of front/rear lights so that they can be seen out on the roads.
If you see see someone without lights in the area please tell them to stop by LLBean.

That's cool. I see a lot of what look like "service workers" crossing Key Bridge on cruisers/similar bikes and they never have any bike-specific gear, let alone lights.

I've never dared trying to ride to Tysons Corner. Actually my wife and I have an agreement that only she will ever even drive the car in that area. Too stressful for me.

Another hot spot for service worker bicycle commuters is the route 50 corridor out near the Loudoun Co. line. I've never seen "by choice" bicycle commuters out that way. I rode that stretch over the summer (Herndon to Autoworld circle in Chantilly, essentially) and let me tell you, Route 50 is pretty hairy. The shoulders are wide when they aren't gobbled up by an exit ramp or crossing a cloverleaf. FABB did a bike light giveaway last year in this area.

that's one of those places where it would be really nice if all the fragmented trails were connected. every time there's new construction, it comes with a little stretch of MUP, but it doesn't seem to be anyone's job to make sure they all connect.

Every once in awhile I have this thought to carry lights with me when I go to a restaurant and then go in the back where the staff park their bikes and put little lights on them. I know when I go to Sweetwater Tavern in Fairfax there are always three or four bikes parked in back, the same with Noodles & Co. in Vienna. In fact that's how I'm going to give away my extra Bike Arlington lights, I'll go in the alleys of the dining establishments I frequent and put the lights on the worker's bikes. Nothing thrills me more than lurking in dark alleys.

I should find a better hobby....

Put dayglow on the rhinestones, and anyone stumbling upon you will take you for an angel on a mission. They will be absolutely right, of course...

I frequently see men coming from work around ten-thirty at night riding without helmets and without lights along Route 7 near Tyson's Corner in the construction kill zone and I realize they are not out there for exercise, or to show off their legs, or their carbon fiber. I worry about them and support FABB's work to give out lights at LL Bean yesterday.

An angel, hardly. I'm just looking for an excuse not to cook. In fact yesterday I was so desperate to get my bike shoes dry I actually put them in the oven, that's how much I love cooking. But it worked, dried out my shoes in about 90 minutes at 200 degrees. It's the only recipe I know.
