Bike to Work Day Sign Up is live now. I'm planning on taking the day off of work again and going to as many stops as possible.

Bike to Work Week is a lot of fun. Coffee and squagels in the Crystal City Waterpark. I owe my friendship with Komorebi and LSG mostly due to BTWW two years ago. Crystal City BID usually gives out good swag everyday and REALLY good swag for people that come all 5 days.
If you come by on Friday, I'll be captaining WABA's tent at Crystal City. If you're interested in volunteering some of your morning to help me promote cycling and WABA, let me know and I can get you signed up.
So I did my BTWD outreach part this morning. I was leaving the hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico at the crack o'dawn and while I'm getting my coffee for the trip to the office, I see a gent in the lobby wearing a BTWD '15 shirt. I accosted (gently) him and let him know that registration for BTWD '18 is open now. He took it well.

I will be unable to attend BTWD 2018 in the DC area on May 18 (I like the t-shirt/text color choice), but I will be participating in Seattle's version: Bike Everywhere Day!

Instead of visiting pit stops, I will be visiting Celebration Stations (which are pretty much the same thing). I will take pics/vids and report on the swag/treats :D
(Quick note: on the Bike Everywhere Day map, there are supposedly 3 Celebration Stations showing in the middle of Lake Washington; they're either water-bike accessible only or just the key for which colors mean which (morning/evening/both).)

Sadly, no. I think I hit 4 or 5 last year and had a really good time. It's a tough balance between participating in biking events and volunteering so that other people can participate in biking events.
I hope every stops by Crystal City to say hi and grab some WABA swag. If you're not currently a WABA member I'll be happy to sign you up at Bike To Work Day.

It's like stained glass. I like arm warmers. It looks like the forum is well represented in the pictures too.

Those are just the side panels though, not arm warmers I think. I do dig the design.

Doh! You're right. I like that the design is a lot different from the past two jerseys.
Just a heads up Crystal City is still looking for Mon and Tues volunteers for Bike to Work Week. I'm volunteering both days, but as of this moment, I'm the only Monday volunteer :(
Here is what Cassie told me about what volunteers do:
This year, we're excited that the Stand will be providing most of the food, so we mostly need volunteers to help check riders in and give them their voucher to redeem for food at the Stand and make sure the bananas and granola bars are stocked on the snack table.
Check in is from 7-9am each day, so it would be great to have folks who can come around 6:45am to help set up (and check in any early birds).
If you can volunteer, send a note to Cassie Hurley @ churley@crystalcity.org. I'd really appreciate the company on Monday morning!

Do you have a planned route? I volunteered last year, but heard amazing stories of swag I missed out on, so am planning on trying to hit as many stops as possible this year instead! :)

On a slight tangent - Ahead of BTWD, DC Dept of Transformation and others are planning a human-protected bike lane on 14th St NW in front of the Trader Joe's on Thursday, May 17 @ 7:30 am. I hope you'll be able to come out and support it --> https://www.facebook.com/events/153828995462769/.

So this is my first BTWD. I want to try and hit as many pit stops as I can tomorrow morning. I bike from Vienna to right around L'Enfant plaza. Right now my list is:
Vienna (where I registered)
Fall Church (Little Falls road), is it worth making a slight detour to hit the East Falls Church metro station stop?
Ballston (never been there/made that turn off custis so that detour will be interesting)
Rosslyn
Crystal City (gotta go for the 5/5 completion this week)
District Wharf
L'Enfant Plaza (is this worth it?)
USDA (is this worth it?)
Depending on timing, I may try and hit G-town waterfront too.

I'm excited for everyone who are going to do the multi-stop route! I did that the last few years, and I would advise that anyone looking to do a tour-de-pit stops make sure to compensate 10-15 minutes for each pit stop (more if you see someone you know) when figuring out the timing. Also, it's easier for those heading towards/into DC because some of the pit stops farther out open/close earlier in the morning.
For inspiration, here's my BTWD ride from last year where I started in Alexandria and did Del Ray, Shirlington, Crystal City, Georgetown Waterfront Park, Rosslyn, Ballston, went to work, and New District Brewing Co (afternoon):

Note that they moved the Freedom Plaza stop indoors.
From the email they sent: "the Freedom Plaza pit stop will be relocated across the street to the lobby of the National Theatre, 1321 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, across from the on-site DC Circulator bus."
It was outside on Boat to Work Day. They were giving out t-shirts in the Circulator. I guess they wimped out this year.
Happy Bike Totally Wet Day! Looking forward to my 17 mile ride home in "heavy rain (https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.90368648264615&lon=-77.03081791911086&site=all&smap=1#.Wv7wkYoh3cu)".
But to prove that every cloud has a silver lining: I don't have to worry about sun screen and my chain isn't squeaking. :cool:
The swag was great, too. I hit four pit stops on the way from the Pentagon transit center to downtown. I got two pairs of bike socks at the Rosslyn pit stop: the obligatory 3rd annual pair of Rosslyn socks and, thanks to drawing a red ticket :D, a fluorescent yellow pair that matches my jacket. Well, almost, I just need some mud stains on the socks. The light-up arm bands are great, too. Hopefully, they create a force-field of safety as I bike/boat down Annandale Rd this pm.

I was part of the People Protected Bike Lane. Out there from 7:30-8:30. At least 30 cyclists came through despite the moderate rain.

There was all sorts of good swag at Anacostia, ART @ Benning Rd, Bladensburg, Port Towns / Edmonston, and Tacoma Park / Sligo creek.
Anacostia and Bladensburg moved indoors, and it was a little hard to see the Anacostia stop from their usual / published stop. Bladensburg looked like an empty tent except for the park ranger waving people to come inside. Everyone else looked wet!
Really not too bad on the rain intensity today. It will be worse on the way home - at least it's bike TO work day, and I can put the bike on the car to come home!

While Bike to Work Day was occurring for most of the country, the state of Washington was celebrating Bike Everywhere Day. Same concept, except it is meant to celebrate more than just bike commuting trips by including errands, taking kids to/from school, and recreationally riding around town.
Just like I did for previous BTWD's, I planned a route to visit multiple celebration stations (same thing as pit stops) before arriving at work (I fulfilled the "Bike to Work" portion of BTWD). I was happily surprised to see that my building management company held its own celebration station in our parking garage right next to our bike cage and bike lockers. They also had mechanics on-site for folks later that morning.

Yeah, that happened at a corner of Safeco Field. Traffic was blocking the box, so as I was making my way through on a walk signal (you couldn't see it or much else due to the truck), another truck came up to make a right turn and stopped when she saw me in the crosswalk. That bit of footage was being played at 300% speed, so it looked worse than it really was. Seattle has its fair share of box blocker intersections, and people don't seem to understand how much blocking the box can really screw up the flow of traffic (but, but, but it's the bike lanes that are causing congestion, of course /s).
