View Full Version : Security Incident Closes Wilson Bridge Trail

I was riding home tonight traveling across the Wilson Bridge from Maryland into Virginia and I was stopped by park police who said there was some kind of incident and the trail was closed. The incident appeared to be at the East end of the bridge.

I was told I would have to 'ride round' which I laughed at as it's a very long way round!

Another bike commuter was caught too and we got the water taxi from National Harbor over to Alexandria. The water taxi was very comfortable but we had to get special permission from the captain to take our bikes on board. Seems like a ferry that takes bikes would be a good idea.

So does anyone know what the incident was?

Nope, but when I was cycling down 16th NW towards K St NW this early afternoon I also had to detour as several blocks were cordoned off with tape, and there were flashing sirens on vehicles and cops all over. I heard one cop talking to the manager of a restaurant/bar that had outside seating telling them that all patrons had to go inside.

Apparently some poor soul hanged himself.

I decided to drive this AM just in case the bridge was still closed but was pleased to see the trail was open again at 6:45 when I passed through.

Not sure what it was, but I saw tour buses being escorted around with a somewhat heavy load of police cars and motorcycles. Must be nice to be able to push everybody else out of your way when you get your site seeing done!
