I love the 50 States ride every September, but they should re-brand it and get the Mayor involved.

Make it the 51 States ride. Include Columbia Road to represent the state of DC since statehood folks have picked New Columbia as the name for the future state someday. Rename the road Columbia Avenue for the day to make it consistent with all the other states (don't bother me about California Street, I'm on a roll). Have the Mayor unveil an honorary Columbia Avenue street sign. Have her launch the ride too. Warm feelings and publicity all around. You wouldn't even have to change the traditional route or start.

Why not make it the 52 States Ride? Puerto Rico Ave (shown here: https://goo.gl/maps/CMFyEBwRZg52 ) is a very slight detour from Hawaii Ave on the usual route, but we'd need to do some campaigning since Puerto Rico always votes to remain a territory. Just an idea, though :)

Actually, Puerto Rico voted to be a state in 2012. Not much has happened with that since then, however.

Hmm, I never knew that! After a quick bit of research, I'm not surprised that they haven't been made a state even after their vote due to the fact that the territory as a whole is >$70 billion in debt. Still, it'd be kind of cool to be alive for the introduction of another state to the U.S.A.
