The Crystal City pit stop will be open Monday through Friday, May 16 - 20 from 7 to 9 am for Bike to Work Week (http://www.crystalcity.org/do/bike-to-work-week9). No info on their website if they are doing something special for those that make all five days. Sorry for you early morning riders.

So why don't any of the Maryland stops do this? No way am I making it from Bethesda to Crystal City before 9:00 am.

Crystal City has an organized and mildly funded community outreach team (the CC BID?) that takes this stuff a little more seriously, and is a little less reliant on volunteers, than most other places I guess. I usually pass by one of the guys who ran the tent last year on my morning commute, I can try to wave him down and ask if he knows anything more about special prizes next time I see him.

I will work on getting the website updated, and sorry for not posted something on here earlier. Bike to Work Week in Crystal City is planned as usual from 7a-9a, and I hope to see you all each morning. This year we will be doing a different prize each morning caps, socks, tools, etc. And of course breakfast and coffee! For safety checks and minor repairs we have some different groups coming in to help - Phoenix Bikes: Wednesday, District Wrench: Thursday, and Bikes for the World: Friday.

Thanks Joe - BTWW is a highlight of my annual cycling calendar. You and your crew always do a fantastic job.

Who are these people that don't have to be at work by 8 a.m.? Maybe I'll tell the bossman to sod off and that I'll be half an hour late every day.

Today : folding tools, patch kit, CO2, bells, lights...

I particularly appreciate the CO2 set. I am now riding around with a spare presta tube, in the spirit of "pay it forward" as suggested by Sunyata. However I have been wondering what good that is, since I do not have a small pump, and am not inclined to ride with a large one - I was thinking I should get a CO2 set, but had not gotten around to it.

On the negative side, I took the lane on Maine Avenue today, and raced to make the vehicular left onto 7th street while I had the light. Made good speed, but there is a nasty piece of pavement there, and I lost my water bottle - right in the middle of the intersection, and I was not inclined to go back there and retrieve it. Not green to abandon it, so I hope one of the construction workers there got it and can use it. But since this is BTWW, maybe I will get another water bottle as swag.

Yes! Hat swag was a hot topic this morning at the pit stop. And since I don't have a hat at all it's a super bonus.

This year's event has been great, and it is always a pleasure seeing everyone out there. This morning was our biggest weekday turnout (except Fridays) since we started the program 6 years ago. We were discussing previous year's attendance this morning, and thought posting them would be fun.

Hope to see you tomorrow.

The good news story here is that ~50% of riders will still show up even if the weather is a washout (I was not one of them...).

Yes, indeed. The Crystal City BID knows what it's doing, handing out reasonably nice swag you'd actually use. (All too often around here I've seen jurisdictions hand out garbage like cheap cheap water bottles that make me doubt their understanding of their target audience.)

reminds me of the time my rear light popped off in the intersection of Constitution and 15th. I WAS inclined to go back to retrieve it. but I could only watch as it shattered into a million and three pieces when a car got there first.

Agreed, it is really great stuff, especially for someone who has been cycling a while.

Perhaps their target audience are newbies and the cheap stuff will hold them on for a while until they start cycling regularly and need higher quality stuff. Those of us who cycle regularly, perhaps, should leave more of that for those who aren't cycling regularly. When I was in grad school and going to conferences, the cheap swag they handed out, like really cheap canvas or plastic bags (not quite a brief case, so a brief bag? Something that held your papers nicely) were great. Over time those were not what I wanted/needed anymore. I no longer take all the "free" stuff at such places anymore.

I would advise anyone that receives swag that they really don't need to donate it to Phoenix Bikes or to the immigrant day laborers at the Shirlington and Education Center (http://www.seecjobs.org/) (located next to start of the W&OD). Most of the latter folks are riding department store bikes and lack proper lighting and safety equipment. I've seen them waiting all day long outdoors for someone to hire them on *Christmas day*.

I appreciated the fact they let the slackers like me pick up the swag they missed today. Thanks to a bunch of pre-op doctor appointments I couldn't bike on Mon or Wed. I'm really happy I now have the socks and bag though--once I get back on my bike in 6-8 weeks I will be a giant Crystal City advertisement with my jersey (from last year), cap, socks, light and bag! And when I get a flat I'll be able to fix it with my awesome Crystal City CO2 cartridge and flat repair kit :)

I didn't get another jersey since I only biked to Crystal City 3 days this week, but I'm not crying too hard since last year's jersey has held up well.

I scored a sweet Crystal City Rides windbreaker today as my five day prize. LeprosyStudyGroup and I pretended to be the Crystal City racing team as we cruised the MTV this morning in our windbreakers.

Really? Aw, dangit! I didn't even check in there today because I didn't see new swag and folks were only talking about T shirts, so I figured why slow others down. Blast it.

Next year I think I might make CC my official stop, as I got Zero swag at Old Town Alexandria. Didn't even get the chance to turn down any cheap water bottles. :-(

I'm thinking CC as my official stop next year too. Columbia Pike was pretty sparse this morning. For newer bikers it also involves braving morning traffic on the Pike, riding sidewalks or taking an indirect route of low stress is desired.

Due to my meetings at EPA-Potomac Yards, this year I was able to stop by the Crystal City BTWW festivities for three days, Tuesday thru Thursday. The socks, light, patch-kit etc. are indeed useful (and very generous), and the Cosi treats fueled me through my long meetings. But even better was the warm welcome and the intimacy of the Crystal City stop, seeing old friends and making new ones (Barbara, David, Peter, et al.) it was hard to pull myself away.
Huge thanks to the organizers. w&w

Thank you to all who came out last week to make it another fun week. I was pretty bummed to miss out on Friday's festivities due to an injury, but the CCBID team said it was great. I wanted to pass along the numbers for the rest of the week. We will also be sending people who showed up to the pit stop a survey to help get some feedback from this year, and upcoming years.
